Kauai Information > Kauai Sunsets: The Green FlashDid you think we only jokin’? Well, the Green Flash does exist. Actually, the green flash can happen any place near the midriff of the earth, but the long horizon over the Pacific makes it easier to see. The green flash is caused by a refraction of the sun’s light rays by the atmosphere over the extreme low angle of the horizon. This bending of the sun’s light causes the green spectrum to be the last color seen before the light disappears. For it to occur the day must be clear. As the sun begins to set, look away until the sun is just totally setting, then watch the last second of the total decent. If the conditions are right, a green flash of color will linger for just a second where the sun was. So, keep lookin’. If you miss it, try this…….
Or, order on the terrace of the Princeville Hotel.
